How to Write a Sales Resume

A sales resume has an advantage most fields don't: your performance is usually already tracked in hard numbers — quota attainment, revenue, deal size, ranking. The mistake most sales resumes make isn't a lack of numbers, it's burying them in vague language instead of leading with them directly.

Lead with quota attainment and revenue numbers

These are the two figures a sales hiring manager looks for first, and they belong front and center in your bullets, not implied:

Weak: "Consistently met and exceeded sales targets." Strong: "Exceeded quota in 11 of 12 quarters, closing $1.4M in new business and ranking #2 of 14 reps company-wide."

If your compensation or targets were structured differently — a smaller book of accounts, a longer sales cycle, a team-based quota — translate your numbers into whatever framing is clearest for a reader evaluating you against their own targets, and be ready to explain the structure in an interview.

Show the full sales motion, not just the close

Strong sales bullets often show a piece of process alongside the result — prospecting volume, pipeline built, deal complexity, or a specific technique that drove the outcome:

"Built a cold outreach cadence generating 40+ qualified meetings monthly, converting to $600K in new pipeline over two quarters."

This proves you can generate opportunities, not just close ones already in front of you — a distinction that matters a lot depending on whether the role is more hunting or account management.

Name your CRM and sales tools

HubSpot, Salesforce, Outreach, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, and any specific methodology you've been trained in (MEDDIC, Challenger, SPIN) are worth listing by name — recruiters and sales hiring managers search for these specifically. Our skills-by-job-type guide has a starting pool for sales roles if you want more examples.

Distinguish individual contributor results from team results

If you led or contributed to a team's performance rather than working purely individual numbers, be precise about which is which:

"Contributed to a team that closed $3.2M in annual revenue; personally responsible for $850K (27% of team total) across 22 closed accounts."

This keeps your individual credibility intact while still giving credit to the team context — a reader who can't tell what was actually yours will discount the whole claim.

Common mistakes

  • Percentages with no base number. "Exceeded quota by 150%" means very little without knowing the quota itself — include both where you can.
  • No distinction between new business and renewals/upsells. These are different skills to a hiring manager evaluating fit for a specific role; be clear about which your numbers represent.
  • Soft, unverifiable claims instead of hard numbers. "Strong relationship-building skills" is exactly the kind of soft-skill claim that needs a demonstrated result — our guide to describing soft skills covers turning traits like this into evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include my actual dollar quota, or just percentage attainment? Both if you can — percentage attainment alone can be misleading (150% of a very small quota is a different achievement than 110% of a large one), so the raw number adds useful context when you're comfortable sharing it.

What if I don't have access to my old sales numbers anymore? A reasonable, honest estimate based on what you remember is acceptable — round conservatively and be ready to explain that the figure is approximate if asked in an interview.

How do I handle a resume for a sales role with a long, complex sales cycle where fewer deals close per year? Lean more on pipeline generated, deal size, and stage-by-stage progression metrics rather than pure deal count, since a smaller number of larger, longer deals is a normal and legitimate pattern in enterprise or complex B2B sales.

Is a one-page resume still standard for experienced sales professionals? Generally yes, following the same resume length rules as any field — two pages only becomes reasonable once you have roughly ten or more years of relevant experience.
