How to Write a Teacher Resume

A teacher resume competes on a specific kind of evidence: did your teaching actually move students forward. It's easy to write a resume that lists subjects and grade levels taught without ever showing what changed for the students in your classroom — that's the gap a strong teaching resume closes.

Put your certification and endorsements up front

Your teaching license, state, subject/grade endorsements, and any specialized credentials (ESL, special education) belong clearly visible, either in a dedicated line under your name or in a short "Certifications" section near the top:

Certified Secondary English Teacher — [State] Grades 6-12 English Language Arts Endorsement, active

This is a hard requirement a hiring committee needs to confirm immediately, similar to how a nursing license needs to be visible on a nurse's resume.

Quantify student outcomes wherever you can

This is the section most teaching resumes skip, and it's the one that does the most persuading:

Weak: "Taught 9th grade English and managed classroom activities." Strong: "Improved average reading comprehension scores 15% across a class of 28 students by introducing weekly formative assessments and differentiated small-group instruction."

Test score improvements, reading level growth, attendance or engagement improvements, and results from a specific intervention you introduced are all legitimate, specific numbers — our guide to quantifying achievements covers finding one even when it's not an obvious built-in metric.

Show curriculum and program work as its own achievement

Beyond classroom instruction, curriculum design, program leadership, and extracurricular contributions are all real, resume-worthy work:

"Designed a new project-based unit on environmental science, adopted department-wide across 4 sections after piloting with strong student engagement results."

List classroom technology and instructional tools

Google Classroom, specific learning management systems, and any instructional methodologies you're trained in (differentiated instruction, IEP development, specific literacy programs) are worth naming explicitly. Our skills-by-job-type guide has an education-specific starting pool if you want more examples.

Common mistakes

  • A resume that lists subjects and grades with no outcomes. "Taught 5th grade math" describes the job description, not an achievement — always add what improved because of your teaching.
  • No mention of classroom management or differentiation, both frequently screened-for skills — a specific example beats a bare claim, following the same "show it, don't name it" principle in our guide to soft skills.
  • Omitting parent communication and collaboration, especially for elementary and special education roles where it's often a significant part of the job and a real, demonstrable skill.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a teaching resume with limited classroom experience, like a recent graduate? Lead with your student teaching placement and any tutoring, camp counselor, or coaching experience formatted exactly like classroom teaching — role, dates, and specific results — the same approach covered in our no-experience resume guide.

Should I include a philosophy of teaching statement on my resume? Not on the resume itself — that belongs in a cover letter or a separate application document if the district specifically requests one; keep the resume itself focused on concrete experience and results.

Do I need a different resume for public versus private school applications? The core content stays similar; adjust emphasis based on what each specific posting or district values — public school applications sometimes have specific format requirements worth checking, similar to government job applications.

Is it standard to include references or recommendation letters directly with a teaching resume? References generally stay off the resume itself, the same rule as any field — see our guide to references on a resume — though some district application systems request them as a separate upload, which is a different step from the resume document itself.
